"Nature study helps children learn science concepts and skills by doing what scientists do: observe the natural world and ask questions about what they see; actively investigate it’s components, systems, and cycles; and share what they learn with others." |

How We Run Our Programs
Experiential Learning
Children learn by doing. Here at Homegrown Sonoma, we expose children to a myriad experiences that they may not otherwise have the opportunity to have. By tending to our animals, for example, they may learn that the food they eat has a life cycle. We provide a wholesome, positive approach to raising our own food.
|
Nature/Play-Based Approach
We believe in allowing children to guide our camps with open-ended play based activities with no purpose or end goal. We believe this helps them build confidence, build social skills, and opens their motivation to learn. Children are naturally wired to do the very thing that will help them learn and grow.
|
Multi-Generational Community
We believe in embracing multi-generational relationships in our camps and in life. There is wisdom to be shared with a life of experience as well as a refreshing young perspective.
It has been researched that people who grow up with this approach have higher levels of cognition and a strong sense of social support. Campers will be given the opportunity to both lead and be led by children of different ages |
Sustainability
We have goals of sustainable homesteading and as we slowly grow we welcome campers to help as much or as little as they would like in that process.
Farm chores are aplenty from providing food/water to our chickens, pigs, and rabbits to socializing, gardening, digging, building, painting, etc. We hope to inspire our campers to be more aware of the natural world and our interactions with it. They will come home dirty and happy...what more could you ask for? |
